[Kaneki deliberated on what to write the Conductor for some time. There are some...very pressing concerns he has, after all, concerning his ability to live in this place long term. Something he can't tell anyone about for obvious reasons, but...would the Conductor even know about it? He can't decide if he should even bring it up.
In the end, he tells himself that he has time. He has a few weeks, at least. He's got time. But now that he's lingered in the mail room for so long, it feels weird to just leave without writing him anything. ...so the letter ends up reading thus:]
Conductor-san,
I've been looking around the building, and I've noticed a lack of reading material. I was wondering if I could possibly request a book from you? It doesn't have to be anything incredibly profound, but I'm just curious to know if there are any books available here. If not, that's okay.
